Meet Your Ski Heroes
There's an old adage that says, "never meet your heroes." But in the ski world, I've found the opposite to be true. People who have achieved great things in the skiing tend to be kind, generous, funny and motivated to give back to the ski community in some way. Here's some of my heroes from the slopes.
Daron Rahlves, an extraordinary versatile athlete
I got to meet Daron Rahlves at an Atomic event in Deer Valley, Utah. Man, is he run to ski behind. He is a rare breed of athlete: Not only did he race Downhill, Super-G and GS on the World Cup circuit, but after retiring from the U.S. Ski Team as an alpine ski racer, he was named to the Olympic Freestyle team and competed in the inaugural skicross event. See my interview with Daron Rahlves here.
Ted Ligety, Mr GS
Ted Ligety is incredible to watch ski in person because of how he can lay his skis on edge and the angles he can create as he arcs turns. He has 24 GS wins on the World Cup, two gold medals and five World Cup GS Championship titles, earning him the nickname, “Mr. GS.” Plus he's very articulate about ski technique.
Even heroes get to meet their heroes
At the Sticky Wicket in Deer Valley, US Ski Team alumni, Daron Rahlves, meets Wayne Wong, pioneer of freestyle skiing, Ski Hall of Famer and star in many ski movies.
